Bank of Commerce (BankCom), an affiliate of San Miguel Corporation (SMC), proudly announces the appointment of Dr. Antonio S. Abacan Jr. as an independent director to its Board, further strengthening its governance backbone as the bank accelerates its strategic growth journey.  He concurrently sits as Independent Director at the conglomerate’s food and beverage arm, San Miguel Food and Beverage, Inc.

Dr. Abacan joins the Bank at a time of strong financial momentum, marked by BankCom’s recent achievement of exceeding the Php 3.0 billion net income mark, its highest to date as a universal bank.

A towering figure in Philippine finance and economy, Dr. Abacan served as a Monetary Board Member of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas from 2017 to 2023. He brings with him decades of leadership across various private institutions, including leading publicly listed universal and savings banks, having previously held key executive positions, such as Chairman and President of Metropolitan Bank & Trust Company (Metrobank), President and Director of Metrobank Card Corporation (wholly-owned subsidiary of Metrobank), and President and Director of Philippine Savings Bank (PSBank), the thrift arm of Metrobank.

His educational background reflects equal rigor. Dr. Abacan holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration majoring in Banking and Finance from Mapúa Institute of Technology and another in Accounting from Far Eastern University. He completed the Stanford Graduate School of Business Executive Program and received a doctorate in Business Administration (honoris causa) from the Philippine Women’s University.
